Common Milkweed Seed, Wildflower Seeds For Planting

This listing is for seeds from the common milkweed plant. You will get the seeds only, not the pod. These seeds were harvested by hand from plants in Iowa. The seeds can be sown directly into the ground, started inside your home, or spread out naturally in your desired area. Milkweed will not usually flower the first year, but don't worry. The Monarchs will still love the plant and lay eggs on them! Then the caterpillars will eat the leaves, so your milkweed will still be a great host even without flowers!

The monarch caterpillars feed on these plants, and are one of the few species that are able to tolerate milkweed's poisonous sap. Growing milkweed encourages the Monarch Butterfly populations that seem to be decreasing around the country. The protection and propagation of this plant is critical for our Monarch Butterflies. Not only will you help nature, you will have the beautiful pink milkweed in your garden.

When can you plant them? The best time to plant milkweed seeds is in the fall (mid-October until ground freezes). This will allow for natural stratification (cold treatment) so the seeds will germinate in the following spring.

Maybe you are not ready to plant quite yet. Not a problem. You can also put the seeds in the freezer for the winter, then sow seeds in the following spring if you are not ready to plant this year. Or you can start seeds indoors around April, and transplant them into the ground in May. Get your seeds while supplies last! Ships within the United States only!
